Tutira Mai Nga Iwi--Just Good Friends
This is the Maori identity song that Kate sings with Koti’s family in “Just Good Friends,” performed here by my son, Samuel Nolting, and set to some of my favorite images of New Zealand that seemed right for the book. I hope you enjoy it!
Do you want to know what the lyrics mean? Here you go!
Tūtira mai ngā iwi
D A
Tātou tātou e
Tūtira mai ngā iwi
B7 E7
Tātou tātou e
A
Whai-a te marama-tanga

All of us, all of us.
Stand in rows, people
All of us, all of us.
Seek after knowledge
and love of others - everybody!
Think as one,
Act as one.
All of us, all of us.
Sing it all a second time.
All of us, all of us!!

Please tell Sam “THANK YOU” as that was fabulous!!!
I listened elsewhere on YouTube, but Sam’s was much better. =)
I thought he did really well too. I love it when he hangs out over here and plays and sings. It’s just a treat for me to listen to him.
I love it! I just wish you had Sam smiling, my favorite part. Is this a redo or the original? He did a great job.
Dan Carter in his undies is a great picture. and It was wonderful you used that in “Just Not Mine” for Josie.
Thanks for the song and the pictures.
It’s a redo, Kathy. The video was too large for my website :(. I liked seeing him too, but then I am his momma. Thanks!
The slide show and your son singing was just absolutely beautiful. After seeing this, I have to wonder how you were ever able to leave New Zealand after living in the midst of all of this. Had to be heart wrenching. Thanks so much for sharing the your love of New Zealand in your series. Those are some of my favorite books. I love the Kincaid series, but I think my heart will always have a soft spot for rugby and New Zealand.
You are so right, Rita. It was so hard–such a wrench at my heart. The only thing that helped was knowing that I could write about it, and knowing I could go back. I’ve been back for two 2-month stays since, and hope to go again in June.
And thanks for the kind words about the books. I hope you’ll read Just in Time. I think it’s going to be some people’s favorite. It “feels” like it to me, anyway.
Great! your son has a terrific voice!
I know I shouldn’t say so–but I think so too. He’s just a lot of fun in all sorts of ways, but I do love hearing him play and sing.
Wow, beautiful voice, song and slide show! Makes me wish much more to be able to visit NZ some day. You know your books are very special to me,
Best wishes
Angeles
Thank you! I love hearing him sing.
The slide show of New Zealand are beautiful. And enjoy hearing Sam sing the Mori song.
Thanks! I loved getting that recording from him. He’s the one who taught me to sing that song–learned it from his Maori friends.
Wow! Loved listening to that. You must especially love it since your son is the singer. Thanks for sharing. A really special treat, and adds a whole new dimension to your books. I am a new reader to your series. So looking forward to all your books!
Loved the song! He’s got a beautiful voice!
